Kindergarten reading · for grown-ups
What kindergarten DIBELS scores mean
A DIBELS report is a check on reading skills and the support a child may need. It is not a pass-or-fail grade. Start with the label beside the score, then choose a small skill to practise together.
Numbers depend on the assessment edition, grade and time of year. Use your school’s report and the current official DIBELS family guide to discuss the right benchmark comparison with their teacher. For the published numbers, see the official DIBELS 8 benchmark goals by grade and season. A percentile is not a percentage correct, and a composite is not a reading age or a simple sum.
Find the label on your report
- LNF · Letter Naming Fluency
- Naming printed uppercase and lowercase letters. This asks for letter names, not letter sounds.
- PSF · Phoneme Segmentation Fluency
- Separating a spoken word into its individual sounds. These are sounds you hear, not syllables you clap or letters you read.
- NWF · Nonsense Word Fluency
- Reading unfamiliar made-up words. CLS counts correct letter sounds; WRC counts correctly read or recombined whole words. They are distinct measures. Reading a familiar real word here does not measure NWF.
- WRF · Word Reading Fluency
- Reading real printed words. This is separate from NWF whole-word reading and from ORF, which uses connected text. ORF appears in the current DIBELS 8 schedule from grade 1.
These explanations refer to DIBELS 8. If your report uses other labels, ask the school which edition and measure they mean.
A little practice · with a grownup
Choose a focus, then try it together
Choose what their teacher suggested, or a skill you know they’re working on.
Start with one focus above. There is no score to enter and no account to create.
Bring one useful question back to school
“Which skill should we work on at home, and can you show me an example?” Ask what support is planned and when progress will be checked. Keep practice short and stop when your child needs a break.
These are original ReadPals activities, without a timer or scoring. They do not reproduce assessment items, interpret an individual score or predict a future result. ReadPals is independent of DIBELS and the University of Oregon.
