Privacy Policy
How ReadPals collects, uses, protects, and retains information.
Effective: October 4, 2026 · Last updated: October 4, 2026 · Version: 2026-10-04
ReadPals is owned and operated by Relay HQ LLC. This Privacy Policy explains how Relay HQ LLC handles information through the ReadPals mobile applications, web application, free games, public website, and related support services. In this policy, “ReadPals,” “we,” “us,” and “our” refer to Relay HQ LLC.
This policy describes our practices by category. Where it names a company as an example, that example is current as of the date above; the categories describe what we do and who may receive information.
Information we collect
We limit collection to information reasonably necessary to provide and protect ReadPals. Depending on the features used, this may include:
- Account information provided by the manager of the account, such as the email address used to receive sign-in links, and other contact and sign-in information.
- Reader and learning information used to maintain reader profiles, personalize lessons, record progress, and report progress to the manager of the account, such as a name or nickname for each reader, the activities played, answers, and learning progress.
- Voice recordings. Some activities ask a reader to say a sound, word, or sentence out loud. When a reader answers one of these activities, a short recording of the spoken answer is collected so it can be checked and feedback can be returned, as described under “Voice recordings and speech assessment.”
- Information kept on the device. The ReadPals apps and free games save some information on the device itself, such as progress, answers, and settings, as described under “Cookies, device storage, and analytics.”
- Where a family came from. When a grown-up arrives from a link that includes campaign information (for example, a website or blog link, an app store campaign, or the Google Play install referrer), we store that campaign information, the referring website’s domain, and the landing page with the account. A grown-up may also choose to tell us how they heard about ReadPals.
- Free game play. The free ReadPals games that can be played without an account, on our website or on other websites that include them, count how each game is used without identifying the player, as described under “Cookies, device storage, and analytics.”
- Support communications and other information submitted when someone contacts us.
- Usage, performance, and diagnostic information needed to operate, secure, diagnose, and improve the service, such as device, browser, and network information, which pages and features are used, how quickly they load, and reports that something went wrong (for example, the type of error, which game it happened in, and which website the game was on). Error reports do not include names, email addresses, or what a reader typed or said.
How we use information
We use information only as reasonably necessary to:
- Provide account access and security, including sign-in, session management, fraud prevention, and protection of accounts and services.
- Maintain reader profiles for separate learners.
- Personalize learning and report progress, including choosing what a reader should practice next, recording completed work and learning progress, and showing that progress to the manager of the account.
- Provide speech feedback by checking spoken answers given during activities that ask for them and returning feedback.
- Save progress, including keeping free game progress on the device and, when the manager of the account chooses, adding it to a reader profile.
- Provide customer support and respond to questions, feedback, and requests concerning personal information.
- Operate and improve ReadPals, including maintaining reliability, finding and fixing errors, measuring performance, improving the learning experience, measuring how families use the app (for example, whether a new account adds a reader, starts and finishes lessons and games, and returns on later days), and understanding aggregate use of our public website and free games.
- Understand how families find ReadPals, using the campaign information described above only to learn which channels help families discover ReadPals.
- Meet legal and safety obligations, including enforcing our terms, protecting users and the service, processing deletion requests, and complying with applicable law.
When we disclose information
We disclose information only when reasonably necessary to operate ReadPals, fulfill a request, protect users or the service, or comply with law.
We may disclose information to service providers that perform functions on our behalf. These providers may use the information only to provide services to us and must protect it appropriately. The types of service providers we use, with current examples, are:
- Hosting, storage, security, and content delivery, which run our servers and deliver our website, apps, and games (for example, Cloudflare; on the web, some fonts and app components are delivered by Google).
- Analytics and performance measurement, which count how ReadPals is used and how well it performs (currently PostHog and Cloudflare Web Analytics).
- Email delivery, which sends sign-in links and other account email (for example, Resend).
- Speech assessment providers, which check spoken answers and return a score.
- Authentication, communications, and customer support tools that help us sign people in, send messages, and answer requests.
We may also disclose information:
- At the direction of the manager of the account.
- When reasonably necessary to protect the rights, safety, or security of ReadPals, its users, or others.
- When required by law or a valid legal process.
- In connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of the business, subject to appropriate protections.
We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not disclose children’s personal information for another company’s advertising or marketing purposes.
Voice recordings and speech assessment
Voice recordings are collected only during activities that ask for a spoken answer, and only after microphone access has been allowed on the device. Each recording is a short spoken answer to that activity. It is sent to our speech-checking service and may also be sent to a speech assessment provider, which scores the answer and returns the result to us.
We use voice recordings only to check the answer and return feedback. The result (for example, whether a sound or word was read correctly) may become part of the reader’s learning information. Voice recordings are not used for advertising and are not sold.
In the free games, spoken answers are checked the same way, without an account, a name, or any lasting identifier attached to them.
How long we retain information
We apply the following maximum retention periods:
- Voice recordings submitted for feedback: up to 14 days.
- Account, reader, and learning information: while the account is active and no longer than 10 years after the account’s last activity, unless the account is deleted sooner.
- Server, diagnostic, and security logs, including error reports: kept for a limited time, no longer than 35 days. Records preserved for investigation of a specific security incident may be retained for up to two years after the investigation closes.
- Backups containing deleted information: up to 14 days after deletion.
- Customer-support communications: up to two years after the request is resolved.
- Legal, fraud-prevention, or safety records: up to 10 years after the related matter closes when retention is reasonably necessary.
- Analytics and performance data held by our analytics service providers: up to 7 years. Analytics from our website pages and free games carry no identifier that lasts beyond a single visit.
- Information kept on a device: until it is cleared, for example by clearing the browser’s site data, removing the app, or, for free game progress, adding it to a reader profile or starting over. We cannot see or delete information that has stayed on a device.
- De-identified and aggregated information: up to 10 years after de-identification.
When an account is deleted, we delete or de-identify its personal information subject only to the limited log, backup, legal, fraud-prevention, and safety periods described above. Its record of where the family came from is deleted, and its analytics records can no longer be connected to any person.
No advertising or sale of personal information
ReadPals does not show advertising. We do not sell personal information or use personal information for targeted advertising. We do not use children’s personal information to create advertising profiles. Campaign and analytics information is not used for advertising, is not sold, and is not used to track anyone across other companies’ apps or websites. We do not collect advertising identifiers.
How we protect information
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure. These safeguards include limiting access to people and service providers that need the information, protecting information in transit and at rest where appropriate, and monitoring the service for security and reliability.
The manager of the account should protect access to their email account and devices and notify us at hello@readpals.com if they believe an account has been accessed without authorization.
Legal bases for processing
Where applicable law requires a legal basis, we process personal information:
- To provide ReadPals and fulfill our agreement with the manager of the account.
- With consent, including authorization provided for a reader where required.
- For our legitimate interests in operating, securing, supporting, and improving ReadPals.
- To comply with legal obligations and protect the rights, safety, and security of users, ReadPals, and others.
When processing is based on consent, that consent may be withdrawn at any time without affecting processing that occurred before withdrawal.
Cookies, device storage, and analytics
ReadPals uses cookies, device and browser storage, and similar technologies to keep accounts signed in, remember settings, save learning progress, operate features, and protect the service. These technologies are not used for advertising, and we do not use cookies for analytics.
Device storage in the free games. The free games, which can be played without an account on our website or on other websites that include them, save the player’s progress, answers, and settings in the browser’s storage on that device, together with a random code that lets the games recognize their own saved progress when played again on that device. This saved information stays on the device. It is not sent to us unless a grown-up signs in, chooses a reader, and chooses to add the saved play to that reader’s profile. The free games set no cookies unless a grown-up signs in, in which case the same sign-in cookie as the ReadPals web app is used.
Campaign information on our website. When someone arrives from a link that includes campaign information, or from another website, the website remembers that campaign information, the referring website’s domain, and the landing page in the browser’s local storage for up to 90 days after the most recent such visit, without cookies or identifiers. If a grown-up then opens the ReadPals web app from the website, that information goes along with the link so it can be stored with a new account as described above.
Analytics on our website pages and in the free games. Our analytics service providers, currently PostHog and Cloudflare Web Analytics, count page visits, button clicks, page performance, and how the games are used: for example, which activity is played, how many answers are right, wrong, or skipped, steps such as starting, finishing, or leaving a game, the website the game appears on, and any campaign information in its link. These analytics use no cookies. Events from one page visit share only a random number that is forgotten when the page closes, so a visitor is not recognized by our analytics from one visit to the next, and the random code the games keep on the device is not sent to analytics. If a grown-up opens the ReadPals web app from a page on our website and then signs in, that page visit’s random number goes along with the link, and our servers tell our analytics service provider that the visit belongs to the account’s pseudonymous identifier described below. This lets us count which pages help families find ReadPals. A visit that does not lead to a sign-in stays anonymous, and visits to other websites that include the free games are never connected to an account. We may record anonymized website sessions, with anything typed into a text box masked, on our marketing pages to improve the site, and we never record the games or the apps children use.
In the ReadPals apps, including the signed-in web app, measurements of how families use ReadPals are generated by our own servers, not by third-party analytics or advertising code inside the apps, and are sent to our analytics service provider, PostHog, under a pseudonymous account identifier. They contain no names, email addresses, child names, audio, answers, or free text, and IP addresses are not forwarded. A reader is represented only by a random-looking identifier. On the web, Cloudflare Web Analytics may also measure page loads and performance without cookies.
Browser and device settings can limit cookies or clear stored information, including remembered campaign information and free game progress, but doing so may sign the user out, reset settings, remove progress that was saved only on the device, or prevent parts of ReadPals from working correctly.
Children’s privacy
ReadPals is designed for readers who may be children, but accounts must be created and managed by a parent or legal guardian who is 18 or older. Children are not asked to create accounts or provide contact information directly.
Our Children’s Privacy Notice describes, in one place, what we collect about children, why, which service providers help us, how long we keep it, and the choices a parent has.
Before we collect a child’s personal information, the parent or guardian creating the account confirms their email address with the sign-in link or code and then checks one line: that they are 18 or older, a parent or guardian, and agree to the Terms of Service, this Privacy Policy, and the Children’s Privacy Notice for any child they add. We record that consent with the exact documents shown and the time it was given, and then send the parent a separate “Welcome to ReadPals” email containing the Children’s Privacy Notice and a link to withdraw consent. That one consent covers each reader profile the parent adds later, so adding a reader asks only for a name.
The manager of the account confirms that they are authorized to create and manage reader profiles and to permit ReadPals to process information for those readers. The manager can review progress, control account features, and request access to, correction of, or deletion of associated information. The manager may refuse further collection or use by disabling the relevant feature, deleting the reader profile or account, or contacting us. The manager may also consent to collection and internal use without permitting disclosure that is not integral to the service; we make no such disclosures, and would ask for that separate consent first.
The free games can be played without an account and do not ask a player for a name, email address, or other contact information. Progress from the free games is added to a reader profile only when the manager of the account signs in and chooses to add it.
If we learn that we collected a child’s personal information without appropriate authorization, we will delete it. Questions or requests concerning a child’s information may be sent to hello@readpals.com.
Privacy rights and choices
The manager of the account may review and update certain information through ReadPals and may delete the account through the account settings.
Depending on applicable law, the manager may also request access to, correction of, a copy of, or deletion of personal information; object to or restrict certain processing; or withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. A request may be sent to hello@readpals.com.
We may take reasonable steps to verify the requester’s identity and authority before completing a request. We will respond within the period required by applicable law and will not discriminate against anyone for exercising a privacy right. If we deny a request, the requester may appeal by replying to our decision.
Automated personalization
ReadPals uses automated systems to choose learning activities, adapt practice, and provide feedback based on learning progress, including automated checking of spoken answers. These systems do not make decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects.
Service availability and international processing
ReadPals accounts are currently offered only in the United States. Relay HQ LLC is based in the United States, and information may be processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate.
We may change where ReadPals is available. Before offering accounts in a new region, we will update our practices and this policy as needed to comply with applicable law.
Changes
If a change materially affects how we collect, use, or share personal information, we will email the account’s parent or guardian before it takes effect. For children’s information, we will not begin a new collection, use, or sharing without first getting the parent’s consent where the law requires it.
