Online practice and a printable set

01

Listen, then read

Play the ReadPals audio when a word is unfamiliar. Ask the child to look at the letters and say the word again without the audio.

02

Connect words with ideas

Pair up opposites such as big and little or up and down. Act out go and over to make the meanings concrete.

03

Keep the book at the center

After a few cards, return to your own copy and invite the child to spot one or two familiar words during the read-aloud.

A five-minute routine

Keep practice small and specific

Stop while the reading still feels successful. A few careful turns with five cards are more useful than rushing through the whole pack.

  1. 1

    Preview four words

Choose one row from the list. Read the words together and talk about what each one means.

  2. 2

    Read your copy

Enjoy the book normally. Pause only when the child wants to point out one of the words you practised.

  3. 3

    Play a quick recall round

Return to the cards and ask which words the child remembers. Keep it light and stop while the game still feels successful.
